Peptide Basics: From Amino Acids to Structure

A plain-language introduction to amino acids, peptide bonds, sequence, structure, and research status.

The short definition

A peptide is a chain of amino acids connected by peptide bonds. The order of those amino acids is the sequence; the conditions around the chain influence the structure it can adopt.

Why sequence matters

Changing the order or identity of amino acids can change charge, shape, stability, and molecular interactions. Similar names do not make two materials interchangeable.

Keep research status visible

Naturally occurring, synthetic, modified, and investigational peptides are broad scientific categories. A laboratory finding is not automatically evidence of an approved product or established use.
